A fine allround performance by Abdool Salim guided North Wakenaam to a comfortable 44 run victory over South Wakenaam in a feature twenty/20 cricket match played last Saturday at the Wakenaam Community Centre ground in Good Success.
North batted first and scored a respectable 151-4 off their allotted overs. Salim was their chief run scorer with 39 (1×4, 3×6) while Chandreka Ragnauth made 37 (2×4, 3×6) and former national U-15 player Oyono Sampson 27 (3×6). Medium pacer Wazir Khan took 2-12. Gurnauth Khemraj 1-27 and Vickram Ramnarine 1-12.
South in reply were off to a brilliant start with Heera Sukram (18) and Imran Khan (24) putting together 46 in 6 overs for the first wicket stand. After Sukram was run out in the 7th over, South lost wickets at regular intervals and were bowled out for 107 in 18 overs. Wazeer Mohamed 18 (1×4, 1×6) and Khemraj 11 were the only other batsmen that reached double figures as Satnarine Sahadeo bagged 4-15, Salim 2-10 and Ragnauth 2-24 for the winners.
Salim collected the man of the match and the best batsman awards while Sahadeo received the best bowler trophy. North Wakenaam took the winning trophy and $40,000 while South received the runner up hardware and & $5,000.
The competition was sponsored by Huckumchand Narine, Mohamed Kalam, Shivchand Ramadeen and Mohamed Azam.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony on behalf of the sponsors, Narine congratulated the winning team and said they were pleased to be associated with cricket on the island. Captain of the South team Mustak Mohamed thanked the sponsors and said he really appreciated what they did for the game on the island. (Zaheer Mohamed)
