Dear Editor,
I respond to Dr. Randy Persaud’s letter “The notion of ‘East Indian Mind’ is backward” (Kaieteur News April 7).
Freddie Kissoon is 100 percent correct in his April 4, column, “The East Indian mind, the East Indian conscience and Guyana’s tragedy” which Persaud is referring to. The wrongs of this government are unparalleled and the silence or quiet whispers of East Indians are not helping. GHK Lall, the new voice of reason and criticism of the PPP’s behaviour is a much welcomed sign.
I would like to say to Randy the notion of the East Indian is alive and real. The discrimination happening to non-Indians with the silence or support of Indians are unheard of. This makes the behaviour very backward.
This is the truth Randy and you have to face it. Denials and running for cover will not change it. Attacking Kissoon for speaking out and “ask forthwith – where are the voices of learned men and women like David Hinds, Eric Phillips, Abu Bakr, Ogunseye, Alissa Trotz, Andaiye, and Dennis Wiggins, all of whom have (rightfully) protested against ethnic pandering” is a cowardly tactic to hide behind the victims.
Randy is hoping these people fall for the bait and feel stricken to forget what the PPP is doing and turn on Freddie who is speaking out for them. Those persons named by Randy, please stay out of the debate, because Randy’s intent is not well meaning. He wants to use you to attack Freddie as the boys sit in Office of the President and Freedom House looking on at how they have been able to divert attention from their racism and salivate as African leaders attack Freddie and spare them.
On every count Freddie Kissoon is right. The silence he condemns is real. The discriminations he points out are real. When asked about this silence some say it is our time, some say Freddie speaking for them and some say they afraid to speak.
One good turn deserves another especially when Africans spoke out against the wrongs of the PNC. Freddie, keep writing, more will be forced to join you.
Rohanie Persaud
