Dear Editor,
I note that Mrs. Gita Singh-Knight, the CEO of CLICO is being paid a super salary of $1.5 million monthly despite the fact that CLICO is in troubled waters.
How did this occur and who authorised it? This lady presided over the total collapse of this company because the regulations of the Insurance Act with respect to investments overseas were violated which resulted in policy holders losing their moneys and employees their jobs There are penalties and fines applicable under the regulations but it appears that this lady is immune from them. Instead, she has been rewarded for her misdeeds and has been retained at CLICO and on the Boards of GuySuCo and the Berbice River Bridge Co. Now let’s take a look at the former CEO of a once reputable company. This gentleman applied the law and adhered to standard rules and regulations with respect to the investments of the company’s funds in a major project which did not find favour with certain powerful persons. I am told that the company was expected to invest a significant sum in the project which did not materialise. So what happened to this person? He has been removed from the company and is before the Court on a charge as was reported in the newspapers last year.
I have highlighted these two matters to show the injustices that continue to occur in this country. There are certain persons who continue to abuse their powers with impunity and their motto is that you either comply at all cost or perish. You must not have a dissenting or different view irrespective of whether it is right. It is high time that we speak out against injustices. I call on the Human Rights Association, Civil Society, The Bar Association, The Private Sector, Religous Leaders and all decent Guyanese to-raise their voices before it is too late.
D. Prince
