– Eight teams to battle for supremacy
Eight of the top First Division teams in Georgetown will compete for top honours in the inaugural Digicel / Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) 20/20 Tournament which bowls off today with two matches, at different venues.
This was announced at the launching of the tournament which was done at the Digicel Head Office yesterday in Kingston.
The eight teams listed to participate are DCC, GCC, GNIC, Malteenoes, Everest, Transport, Police and GDF.
In attendance at the launching were GCA President former West Indies player and Coach Roger Harper, GCA Public Relations Officer Colin Alfred, Digicel’s Public Relations and Events Manager Shonette Moore, Captains of the respective teams and President of the Georgetown Cricket Umpires & Scorers Association Grantley Culbard.
Harper speaking at the occasion said that the GCA was indeed thankful of the of Digicel’s support for the tournament which will create an opportunity to help in the development of young players.
Harper commented that the GCA / Digicel would like to support excellence, adding that they must strive to meet high standards.
The Organisers have also planned the tournament to assist the Guyana Cricket Board in its plans to select the national team that will participate in the upcoming West Indies Cricket Board Twenty/20 Competition scheduled for July.
“This is an opportunity for us to start our preparations for the WICB’s Twenty/20 Competition,” Harper stated.
Harper added that it is the hope of the GCA that the relationship between them and Digicel is a long lasting one that will serve not only the two parties, but the players as well.
He disclosed that the winning team will collect $150,000, while the runner-up receives $75,000, 3rd place $45,000 and 4th placed team $30,000.
There will also be awards for outstanding individual performances including the Player of the Tournament; Best Bowler and Highest Scorer. Moore speaking on behalf of the sponsor said that the Company was excited about the competition and they fully understand the potential of the tournament.
“We are always looking for opportunities to help in the development of our young people,” Moore stated.
The competition commences today with matches at various venues.
In Zone A- DCC will play Police at DCC at 14:00 hrs, while GCC and Transport collide at 14:00 hrs at Police.
In Zone B- Malteenoes play host to GDF from 14:00 hrs, while Everest and GNIC battle at GDF at 14:00 hrs.
The semi-finals is slated April 17, while the final and third place matches will be played on April 24.
