DEAR EDITOR,
Should Winston Shripal Murray decide to run for the Presidency in next year’s General Elections I will be rooting for him. Having given yeoman service to Guyana in the National Assembly for generations he has demonstrated that he has the mettle, fortitude and the substance to bring back dignity and respectability to the Presidency.
Mr. Murray is a judicious statesman, whose intellect, experience, dignity and integrity have made him primus inter pares. I therefore proudly wear my support for him as a badge of honour.
Apart from the many important government portfolios he held in his political career (such as Head of the Presidential Secretariat, Senior Minister – Trade and Tourism/Deputy Prime Minister, acting President, etc.), he was also Mr. Desmond Hoyte’s Prime Ministerial Candidate in the 1997 general elections.
Mr. Hoyte (my mentor and my hero) once said to me that he thinks Mr. Murray was the ideal person to succeed him as party leader. Also, on the hustings in Berbice, Mr. Hoyte was asked who would take over from him should he win the elections and is unable to continue as President.
He then quietly and gracefully put his arm around Mr. Murray and replied, “This is the gentleman who will take over from me, should anything happen to me.”
I consider this very significant as Mr. Hoyte was a hard taskmaster and he only hired the “best” to serve around him.
I have every confidence that like Mr. Hoyte, Mr. Murray will also run a meritocracy where (instead of nepotism and cronyism) the only qualification you will need to be hired is the ability to do the job and the honest desire to serve your country.
Given the fact that Mr. Murray is advancing in age, I think this might well be his last “hurrah” so to speak.
Now is his time, and all our young people who dream of a bright future, in the land of their birth, should seize this moment in our history.
We cannot afford to miss this boat, as we did with Mr. Hoyte. Mr. Murray is a very genuine, kind, compassionate, honest and sincere person. He is not your typical politician who will tack and turn as the situation dictates to achieve his or her selfish ambition. With Winston, what you see is what you get.
I am convinced that his Presidency will help to unshackle our nation from the divisive politics of the past 50 years. I am also convinced that once elected he will field a talented and diverse team to leapfrog our nation into prosperity.
He and Mr. Carl Greenidge (former Minister of Finance) did it before under the Economic Recovery Program (ERP) and this time he will do it even better. I have no doubt in my mind that his Presidency will at last bridge the gap between promise and practice.
Our nation is crying out for change so I trust that Mr. Winston Shripal Murray will rise to the occasion. As a nation, we will win with Winston.
