The Caribbean’s legal fraternity has lost one of its stalwarts with the passing of Guyana-born, retired Chief Justice and President of the Court of Appeal of the Bahamas, Justice Sir Joaquim Gonsalves-Sabola.
Justice Gonsalves-Sabola passed away on Tuesday in hospital in his adopted home in The Bahamas.
He originally served in Guyana as a Justice of the Court of Appeal among other posts before relocating with his family to The Bahamas.
In 1984, he was appointed to that country’s Supreme Court and then later became a Bahamian citizen.
He served as the Bahamas’ Chief Justice from 1989 to 1995 before being made Court of Appeal President, a post he held until his retirement in 1999.
Sir Joaquim was knighted by Queen Elizabeth in 1995 and was also the Master of the Bench of Gray’s Inn, London. Bahamas Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham paid tribute to the fallen regional legal luminary, describing him as a person who was highly regarded by colleagues on the bench. Prime Minister Ingraham, in a statement, said that he and his colleagues are deeply saddened to learn of the death of Sir Joaquim.
According to the Prime Minister’s statement, Sir Joaquim arrived in the Bahamas from Guyana where he had already distinguished himself on the bench. Ingraham noted that the Gonsalves-Sabola family made the Bahamas home and Sir Joaquim eventually became a Bahamian citizen of the country where he served with quiet distinction, first as a Justice of the Supreme Court and later as chief justice and finally President of the Court of Appeal.
“Sir Joaquim had a great love and respect of the law and played a not insignificant role in early initiatives to modernize our laws and the practice of law in our country. He was highly regarded by his colleagues on the bench, by those in the legal profession who appeared before him and by Bahamians across the spectrum of our society,” the Bahamian Prime Minster said in his statement.
Ingraham expressed sincere condolence on behalf of his government and people of the Bahamas to the fallen judge’s family, Lady Gonsalves-Sabola and their three daughters.
