Vehicle owner tells cops…
Police are trying to verify reports that an overseas-based Guyanese was behind the wheel of the car which struck down 27-year-old Romona Harris on Good Friday night.
Kaieteur News understands that this is the version of events that the owner of the vehicle gave to police after turning himself in on Monday.
The man has reportedly told investigators that the relative has since returned overseas.
Police confirmed yesterday that the owner, who is from Better Hope, East Coast Demerara, was still in custody yesterday. The vehicle has also been impounded.
Romona Harris, who has a one-year-old daughter, was walking along the main road in Diamond Housing Scheme around 22:00 hrs on Good Friday when she was struck from behind by a speeding car.
She was dragged about 70 feet from the point of impact.
The driver continued heading east along the same roadway before reportedly turning into Grove Housing Scheme.
Harris succumbed to multiple injuries some 20 minutes after arriving at the Diamond Diagnostic Centre.
Eyewitnesses described the car as a silver-grey vehicle, while police retrieved a shattered headlamp, with the licence number HB 6471, from the scene.
