T&T are Regional U-15 champs, Guyana finish 3rd
Home team Trinidad and Tobago handed Guyana their only defeat in the 5th and final round of the competition at the Inshan Ali Park yesterday to take the 2010 Regional 50-overs under-15 cricket tournament.
Jamaica, who like T&T and Guyana finished with just one defeat, ended as runner-up after they beat the Leeward Islands by 75 runs to follow up their victory against T&T on Saturday.
T&T took championship honours by virtue of having a better run rate than Guyana and Jamaica after the three teams finish at a three-way tie on points at the top of the table.
Guyana had to settle for third place after yesterday’s loss. Guyana, with titles at this level in 1998 and 1999, began yesterday’s game needing a win to lift their 3rd title at this level but their top order batting struggled badly chasing the 177-8 off their allotted 50 overs made by the hosts.
The Guyanese, the only team to enter the final round unbeaten could only reach 109-9 off their 50 overs as only Kamesh Yadran (28), Shalendra Shameer 21 and Gudakesh Motie Kanhai (11) managed to get into double figures.
It was a disappointing end to a very good tournament for the Guyanese who are expected home today.
Man-of-the Match Jeremy Solozano stroked a classy 79 and got support from
Nicolas Pooran (31) as the Trinis looked the better mentally prepared team in yesterday’s battle, especially after Guyana’s leading batsman Brian Sattaur was leg before for 5 inside the first five overs before Guyana had reached 15.
Motie-Kanhai took 3-34 and fellow left-arm spinner Devon Lord 2-31 for the South Americans who just could not change gear when they batted as Justin Joseph captured 4- 26 and Vikash Mohan took 2-7.
Barbados beat the Windwards in the other final round match played yesterday.
