The dominance of the Belles in Power Boat Racing was finally seriously challenged at the Bartica Easter Regatta on day 1 of the 2010 event which is taking place at the Golden Beach Circuit.
After the first day of competition, which was blessed with excellent weather for the first time in many, many years, none of the Belles were able to take the top spot in any of the races, the dominance and attention switching to the Pomeroon.
Leading the charge was Neil Gonsalves in the 225HP to unlimited category with two exciting wins over Barticians, Randy Belle and Dave Scott in that order in both events.
The power of Gonsalves’ machine powered by a Mercury Engine was too hot for his rivals to handle.
The first race saw Gonsalves taking over the lead from Belle who had developed a comfortable lead, but on lap 4 of 5, Gonsalves made his move to power past Belle and the rest of the filed establishing a commanding lead before taking the chequered flag.
Belle in charge of Wave Runner and Scott in command of ‘Jaguar’ had no answer to Czyzie Boy power. Clarence Belle who dominated this class last year had to drop out of this event on lap 2 as a result of a damaged engine.
To prove that his first win was no fluke, Gonsalves was even more devastating in securing the double, lapping Russian (Vijay Buckan), Tatianna (Stephen Belle) exited the race on lap 3.
Gonsalves’ countryman Henry De Silva was the top competitor in the 25HP – 40HP division recording a double victory. Jose Jardine piloting Fire Fox and Omar Hussain in command of Pujah placed 2nd and 3rd respectively.
Jardine returned to take the top spot in the final event of this category ahead of Junior Alexander (White Boy).
The only 75HP – 90HP contest of the day, saw Mark Fagundes in control of Jet & Trailer powering to victory over Vijay Buckan (Russian).
In the two Canoe sprints, Whitney Welcome, much more known for his exploits on the football, field displayed his versatility with the paddle, storming to victory in both races. Elvis Williams and Jamal followed in that order in the first event.
His Excellency President Bharrat Jagdeo, Public Service Minister Dr. Jennifer Westford and Minister of Tourism Maniram Prashad graced the event with their presence, mingling and chatting with the fans at one point.
Opposition Member of Parliament Basil Williams was also present. Regional Chairman Holbert Knights expressed delight at the presence of the dignitaries while also commending the competitors, spectators and corporate Guyana for their overwhelming support in making the activity a success.
Today is the second and final day of the boat racing and will see competition in the 75HP – 90HP category, two races will be contested in the 115HP – 200HP and another two in the 225HP to Unlimited. The Jet Ski Riders will tangle in four races. An exciting day of action awaits spectators.
