Chanderpaul, Dowlin fail to show
By Sean Devers
In a festive atmosphere in mostly sunny conditions at the DCC ground, West Indies left-hander Narsingh Deonarine yesterday entertained a vocal crowd with a Man-of-the-Match 28-ball 54 as New Line Cavaliers won the inaugural Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) 15/15 cricket festival in fading light.
The West Demerara side who beat Everest in the semi-finals, defeated city side GCC by 10 runs in an exciting final. Deonarine capitalised on being dropped on the mid-wicket boundary by Winston Nelson on 21 off Jeetendra Sookdeo to play an array of audacious shots in his match winning innings which was decorated with 3 fours and five sixes.
Deonarine who eventually skied a caught and bowled offering to Ricardo Jadunauth after slog-sweeping the spinner for consecutive sixes off the two previous balls, helped the ‘bomb squad’ Cavaliers to 153 all out in 14.5 overs.
Orin Ford, a member of Guyana’s Championship winning 2006 Stanford 20/20 squad, took 4-19 for the Cavaliers as GCC could only reach 143-7 when their 15 overs expired despite a busy 28-ball 43 from left-hander Vishal Singh and a pugnacious 29 off 14 balls from Guyana Skipper Ramnaresh Sarwan.
The large crowd was on its feet for most of the GCC run chase with Sarwan and Singh batting in enterprising fashion.
A dismissive pull over mid wicket for six and a disdainful clip off his leg for four from Sarwan kept GCC in the hunt and even when the stylish West Indies player was dismissed the game was still in the balance as Leon Johnson (25) and Singh, who played the scoop and the reverse sweeps to good effect on the small ground.
But it was always going to be difficult keeping up with a run rate over 10 once Sarwan was out of the way.
In the end, the professional looking Cavaliers side, who must have their eyes set on the national 20/20 title to earn a spot in the WIPA tournament in Trinidad in early August, won with ease as 19 were required from the final over bowled by Ford.
Earlier, Former West Indies under-19 opener Richard Ramdeen clobbered 6 fours and a six in a 25-ball 42 after Nelson had removed the potentially destructive Andrew Lyght Junior for a duck and Cavaliers most accomplished batsman Gajanand Singh (2) in the opening over of the game.
However, Berbician Deonarine, showing great commitment to the tournament organisers and his adopted team, took the game away from the opposition with his scintillating shots.
The West Indies pair of DCC’s Travis Dowlin and GCC’s Shivnarine Chanderpaul failed to show up yesterday leaving plenty of those who had turned up to see them bat very disappointed. Plaques honouring them had to be shelved and while the other two present Guyanese Test players (Sarwan and Deonarine) were presented with plaques, no official explanation was given for the no-show of Chanderpaul and Dowlin.
The versatile Paul Wintz, who is among the top seam bowling all-rounders in Guyana, chipped in with a cameo 21 as Nelson (2-24) and Ravi Sarwan (2-15) were the main wicket takers for GCC.
The Cavaliers side was without their leading bowler Mahendra Nagamootoo, who is playing professionally overseas.
Cavaliers took home the Andrew Lyght senior Memorial trophy and $60,000 while GCC received the runner-up trophy and $30,000.
DCC President Alfred Mentore and his executives must be commended for organising a truly entertaining event. The Food and drinks bar along with pulsating music from massive speakers beyond the boundary added to the fun and frolic at the Queenstown venue.
