Soesdyke based Timehri Panthers are the 2009 Stag Beer/East Bank Football Association division-one champions following a 2-1 win over close rivals Grove Hi Tec at the Grove Community Ground on Sunday last.
A single point had separated the two sides going into the final game of the League, with Timehri only needing a draw but Grove were in a must win situation.
The encounter proved to be an intense battle with both teams going after each other but goals were very hard to come by.
It was the home team that broke the goal drought on the stroke of half time, Orson Francois netting in the 45th minute.
Grove, were no doubt in the driver’s seat at this point but the Soesdyke based boys had other ideas and were patient in clawing their way back into contention.
Lawrence Steele found the room to skillfully curl a well taken free kick past the Grove wall in the 65th minute to cancel out the home team’s advantage.
The tough nature of the game continued and in the final straight, Timehri sealed the deal when Dexter Ferrell netted with 7 minutes to full time as the winners ended on 21 points, 4 clear of second placed Grove.
The opening game of the afternoon’s double header card saw Kuru Kuru Warriors defeating Yarrowkabra by a similar 2-1 margin. Cordell Johnson (12) and Marion DeFreitas in the 35th minute were the players netting for the winners who ended the league on 19 points, Yarrowkabra in their debut season ending on 12 points in the 8 team competition.
Timehri will receive the Championship trophy and $150,000 with Grove collecting $75,000 for their runner-up position. The Warriors will receive $50,000 and Yarrowkabra $25,000, all with trophies.
The presentation of prizes will be held next Friday at Ansa McAl BV Officer from 10:00hrs.
