In what is being described as a bold and timely initiative, Mahdia businessman, Roger Hinds, has offered immediate sponsorship for two amateur boxers to get them through preparation until the Commonwealth Games in India later this year.
Following a brief visit with head of the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA), Parliamentary Secretary Steve Ninvalle, Hinds, who operates Hinds Mini Mall and Hotel among other businesses at Mahdia, readily decided to assist two amateur boxers to the tune of $45,000 each per month for their preparation for the upcoming engagements.
Hinds requested that PS Ninvalle and his team of executives and coaches select the pair for the funding which he will present from this month. Hinds is known to be an ardent sports fan and supporter. The boxers are expected to be called ‘Team Hinds’ in recognition of his contribution. GABA is in to process of identifying several boxers and plan to have them encamped in preparation for the CAC and Commonwealth games.
GABA president, Steve Ninvalle expressed gratitude to Hinds for his willingness to aid the sport and the development of two youngsters. Ninvalle told this newspaper that boxing has brought Guyana its highest accolades in international sport and its only fitting that the business community embrace the sport and assist in ensuring the country medal at the 2012 Olympics.
Ninvalle noted that boxing through Michael Parris brought the country its only Olympic medal, Bronze, along with several world titles (male and female) over the years. He called on the corporate sector to collect the baton from Hinds and aid the preparation of the other amateur boxers as they look further down the road to London 2012.
PS Ninvalle said he is encouraged by the support now coming forward for amateur boxing from the business community and Government, who have assisted in a big way, and said a big thank you to all those who have come forward and are coming forward to help. He said that this was only the start and he is anticipating that the support grow and continue for a long time.
