– Club Secretary predicts big turnout
Secretary of the Port Mourant Turf Club (PMTC) Chattergoon Ramnauth was the recipient of a cheque for $280,000 from Digicel’s Business Development Manager Gavin Hope yesterday at the Company’s Head Office in Kingston.
Ramnauth speaking with Kaieteur Sport said that the sponsorship represents the first prizes for the two ‘I’ & Lower events and some of the country’s best horses in that category have already confirmed participation for this Sunday’s showdown in Berbice.
Eight races are carded for the day with the feature event being the 3 year-old Open for Guyana and West Indian bred horses over a distance of six and a half furlongs.
Ramnauth informed that this is one of the club’s biggest Meet for the year and he is optimistic that Digicel will conduct better business this time around with the turfites expected to come out in their thousands.
Commenting on the current state of the sport, the PMTC Secretary believed that it is growing at an alarming rate and the improvement has created an explosion of new owners who’re now bringing in horses from Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica and the USA.
“With the arrival of horses from those three countries, the competition is more intense and every owner now wants to win at every Meet,” Ramnauth pointed out.
He disclosed that the Club itself has been undergoing some facelift with the Main Stand currently under renovation which is expected to be completed in May, while they’ve also done some work on the inner track to accommodate grass track motor racing, all aimed at ensuring that the Club remain financially viable.
He assured the media that there will be zero tolerance when it comes to crowd encroachment, adding that adequate security personnel have been retained to ensure that those rules are not breached.
Meanwhile, Hope in his remarks said that Digicel has once again demonstrated its willingness to uphold one its corporate responsibilities which is to aid in the development of sports locally, further stating that this feature of its operations will continue in the future.
Starting time is 13:00 hrs.
