Dear Editor,
Once more I have to bring to the attention of the public the continuous downfalls of the University of Guyana Students Society in relation to ingenious problems at the Turkeyen campus.
I am presently a second year student at the university and am very observant of the present student society. I must say I raised the issues with the current UGSS councilor, Adjtya Ganesh Mahipaul, who is very reluctant to heed advices from students.
He would rather go by the “paper work”, which means sending in reports among other tedious processes.
Simple problems continue to face us. For example, there is no proper lighting system on the campus.
After night sessions we are forced into waiting in the darkness. Totally unacceptable for such a university which was established for forty-seven years! There have been numerous robberies and attacks on students.
The Turkeyen Police Station could testify to this. Many such reports don’t make it to the media. Fights are also prevalent. For the last two semesters I could clearly remember there were over three fights on the campus alone.
In today’s fast paced world students carry all kinds of weapons. What is the President, Mr. Sherod Avery Duncan, doing to protect us the innocent students?
Also the reckless driving and the music blasting from students are also present.
Recently, they student body implemented the student past ticket on their vehicle. Now Mr. Editor, how is this of any use? Would this stop the reckless driving? Why were the students not allowed to voice our thoughts on this? How sensible of the persons running the student council to notify us on the new rule on the broken notice boards around the campus.
Mr. President you and your colleagues are doing a fine job keep it up. However, one of the biggest problems all of us university students face is the lengthy lines at the admissions and bursary buildings.
At the end of every semester students are forced into joining these lines and in the baking sun.
Sometimes I wonder when we would be able to catch up with the other university abroad.
Finally, I wish to challenge the president of the UGSS to tell us university students what he has done for us? And one recommendation Mr. President, maybe you should spend less time updating the UGSS face book page and focus on us more in giving us a better campus.
Concerned university student.
