President of the Georgetown Cricket Association, Roger Harper recently unveiled the itinerary of his organisation for the fiscal year, while urging the players to gear up for a year of hectic activities. Mr. Harper said that this year’s itinerary was planned to provide as much publicity and exposure for the young cricketers.

The GCA has always had a strong cricket programme. In 2009 we ran a number of competitions and we have successfully wound up the 2009 itinerary with the culmination of youth programmes,” Mr. Harper disclosed. He said that his executives are now working assiduously to ensure that cricket clubs in Georgetown are kept active at all levels. “Not only will we have a number of competitions but this year we aim to hold a number of clinics and camps in an effort to up-skill our players at all levels,” said Mr. Harper. He further said that more emphasis would be placed on the youths.
He reminded that his organisation, in partnership with the Commonwealth Youth Programme, arranged workshops in the last year where young cricketers were exposed to leadership and life skills. He pointed out that the initiative was orchestrated by past President, Alfred Mentore. “These workshops went very well and brought to the fore a number of issues and recommendations,” said the GCA boss. He assured that the GCA aims to use the recommendations procured from those sessions to incorporate leadership and life skills sessions in the respective clinics and camps.
The GCA bowls off its programme shortly with its 2nd Division, 40 overs competition and follows up with the 1st Division tournament in early April. A 20 /20 competition is also on the cards. “It is our aim to start a Peewee Clinic & League for U-13 players to be conducted mainly on Saturday mornings starting early May,” Mr Harper disclosed. Activities continue in July with the commencement of the 1st Division 2-Day Competition and the 2nd Division 2-Day Competition. Plans are also in train to run off the U-15 and U-19 competitions in August. He said that this competition was organized during the August holidays to address the parents’ concern for the children missing school. The 2nd division 20 /20 competition will follow sometime in October.
“We also plan to organise camps to boost our development programme,” Mr Harper intimated. He said that the duration of these camps would range between 2 to 3 weeks and would be held during the August holidays.
The GCA itinerary also encompasses clinics and workshops that will be held throughout the season. “We have already secured sponsorship for a number of our programmes and we are working assiduously towards tying up sponsorship for the others,” Mr. Harper assured. (Michael Benjamin)
