The Guyana Scrabble Players Association has named a strong 8-member squad to contest the Tri-Nation Caribbean Championship which also involves Barbados and will be played in Trinidad and Tobago from April 2-5.
The players selected are Fed Collins (Captain), Abigail McDonald, Moen Gafoor, Ewart Adams, Orlando Michael, Ulric Harris, James Krakowsky and Leon Belony.
Kaieteur Sport takes a look at the individual players.
Abigail McDonald – Since joining GASP in 2004 McDonald has been one of the most consistent performers. Her consistency was rewarded in 2009 when she stopped Fred Collins from winning 3 national titles in a row and subsequently took over the #1 ranking. A player who thrives under pressure, McDonald is a key member on the Guyana team and is expected to do great things. World Scrabble Championship representative to Malaysia in 2009 this is the second time that she will time representing Guyana.
Ewart Adams – Adams is a former #1 ranked player. He propelled himself to the top of the rankings with consistent performances against top opposition. Runner up at the national championship in 2007, Adams is a very important member in the team’s plans to succeed and should prove very hard to beat in Trinidad and Tobago. He too will be representing Guyana for the second time.
Ulric Harris – Harris is Guyana’s most experienced player. He is a two- time national champion and runner-up three times. A retired headmaster, Harris can teach any unsuspecting opposition a lesson in scrabble on his day. He has represented Guyana seven times previously.
James Krakowsky – Krakowsky has been an integral member of GASP since joining in 2007. He has earned the respect of his peers by pushing them to the limit with his vast word knowledge. Krakowsky has been a regular on the podium in tournaments and has maintained a high ranking due to his consistency. This will be his first time representing Guyana.
Leon Belony – Belony is one of the most exciting young prospects in the Caribbean. A passionate and hard working player, he showcased his talent by defeating a strong field in the national team warm up tournament prior to the T&T trip, thus achieving his highest ever ranking. This will be his second time representing Guyana.
Orlando Michael – A late replacement for Floyd Carmichael, Michael makes the team due to his tenacity and hard work. An enthusiastic player, Orlando can push any opposition to the limit; he is a Five-time representative of Guyana.
Fred Collins – Captain: Collins is by far Guyana’s most decorated scrabble player. This four-time national champion and twice runner up was Guyana’s MVP in the previous Caribbean Championships with 9 wins out of 12.Collins is a WSC representative to Mumbai in 2007.Remains the key to Guyana’s hopes of succeeding. This will be his Seventh time representing Guyana.
Moen Gafoor – Gafoor is an important cog in the wheel of the Guyana team. His game has improved considerably as a result of hard work and commitment. Gafoor has the potential to go to the top of GASP’s rankings with his vast knowledge of anagrams. Will be a handful in Trinidad. Third time representing Guyana.
