Group 4 could be his next move
Memories of Jad Rahaman tearing up the South Dakota Circuit in the 80’s were evoked by his son Ryan, who produced a stirring performance in Group 3 that must have sent jitters among Group 4 competitors.
The young Rahaman driving his Ford Cosworth Sierra seemed to relish the Organisers idea to run the two groups together as he skilfully avoided traffic and all the intense rivalry between the ‘big boys’ and nearly embarrassed them when he led for the majority of the race, before being passed by Kevin Jeffrey’s Mitsubishi Evolution with about three laps to go in the race.
He won his category and finished second overall, leaving many who witnessed the battle in awe of his courageous display.
Speaking with the media about his performance, Rahaman said that even though he was a bit disappointed with the low turnout of Group 3 cars, his next intention was basically to keep pace with the Group 4 machines.
“This car has done a personal best of 36.35 and that to me is very good,” Rahaman pointed out.
He indicated that for him to compete with success in the bigger category, the team would need to make some necessary changes to the car.
He added that all along they knew the car’s capability and his performance have boosted his confidence now that he could compete at the highest level.
“We are now more confident, we know exactly what we have to do now.”
Rahaman asked whether it was Sunday’s performance that made him feel that he could mix it up with the bigger boys, responded by saying that it was always their intention to move up to the group 4 category someday.
He extended thanks to his team of mechanics that include the seasoned Freddie Mapp and Tedroy out of Barbados, Hakim, Veeko, Junior and Fidel of Canada.
Rahaman also thanked his sponsors Valvoline, Stag Beer, J.R Burger, Guysons Engineering, GEM Magazine and Sankar Auto Sales, all of who have stood with him throughout the years.
