Linden businessman, Herbert Thompson, is appealing a Magistrate’s recent ruling that he was in the wrong when a police rank shot him in 2006, and that he should pay a $150,000 fine or spend five years in prison.
Thompson yesterday took the unusual step of picketing near the old Co-operative Bank in Republic Avenue, Linden, to bring attention to his case.
He was supported by two other protesters.
Republic Avenue was where Thompson was shot in the back of the right leg on December 21, 2006, during a confrontation with the police.
According to the businessman, the trouble began when he decided to set up a roadside beverage stall in Republic Avenue, Linden.
He alleged that one rival businessman was upset by this and sought the help of some police ranks to have Thompson’s stall removed.
By then, Thompson alleged that he had invested some $4.5M in stock.
Thompson has claimed that this led to the confrontation between himself and two policemen, which ended with him being shot. The former athlete was hospitalised for a month, and even after he was finally discharged, had to hobble around on crutches for a further three months.
Thompson filed a million-dollar lawsuit against the Attorney General, the Commissioner of Police and two police officers in connection with his injury. The lawsuit was thrown out of court.
According to Thompson, it took one year and three months before he was charged with assault in relation to the shooting case.
On Wednesday last, Magistrate Ann Mc Lennan found him guilty of the charges. He was fined $150,000 with an alternative of five years’ imprisonment. He was been given two weeks to pay the fine.
The businessman’s attorney confirmed that he is appealing the Magistrate’s decision. “I’m not giving up,” Thompson said.
The businessman and former athlete is also still trying to seek justice regarding an even greater incident.
On December 17, Quacy Thompson was assisting to repair a truck that had broken down near Sherima, on the Rockstone/Linden trail when a car, allegedly driven by Winston Hinds, slammed into the truck.
According to reports, the impact of the collision caused the truck to shift backward and one of the wheels crushed Quacy Thompson’s skull.
Winston Hinds, 40, of Blue Berry Hill, allegedly slipped out of the Mackenzie Hospital on Wednesday night, while receiving treatment for injuries he sustained in the mishap. He has not been seen since, police and relatives said.
