With the a2nd round berth at stake in the final match of Group D action in the Caribbean Football Union Champions League Qualifying competition at stake, it will be no holding back between local titans Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United and the Guyana Defense Force from 16:00hrs at the GCC Ground, Bourda.
Alpha though, goes into the game with the physiological advantage and just need a draw to advance since the Army lost their encounter against Suriname’s Walking Boys who has already qualified for the next round after drawing with ‘The Hammer’ 1-1.
Alpha had dominated the match against Walking Boys and should have scored more goals but was not as disciplined upfront as they usually are, a situation they will be seeking to correct against the GDF who will be hoping to fire on all cylinders since they have nothing to lose. The respective forwards hold the key to the success of either side this afternoon and fans can look forward to some exciting football.
The Army looked a shadow of themselves against the Surinamese and according to Head Coach Marlon Washington they will be going all out defeat Alpha. The main problem for the Army and Alpha was that they were both guilty of not shooting to goal, preferring to take the ball as close as possible to goal before taking a shot.
That situation is expected to be very different today with the defense of both sides expected to work overtime.
Captain Warren Gilkes along with Marlon Benjamin, Stellon David and Telson Mc Kinnon who should both be in the starting side after coming on in the first game are some of the key players for the Army in this crucial encounter.
Delon Young in goal, Selwyn Isaacs, Darious Garraway, Eusi Phillips, Kevin Lewis, Shavane Seaforth, Peter Parks and main marksman, the dependable Delroy Deen will all have to combine efforts in order to stave off the many raids expected to be made by Alpha in the final third.
Dwight Peters, Elton Browne and Dwain Jacobs will hope that their shooting boots are intact and their shots are accurate if Alpha is to advance in their second tournament as they seek to deny the debutants, GDF.
Howard Lowe, Kelvin Mc Kenzie, Brion Baker and Anthony Harding are all expected to start at the back again with Shawn Bishop, Philbert Moffatt and Edison Gomes lending support in midfield. Ronson Williams is expected to start between the uprights.
Kick off time at the GCC ground is 16:00hrs.
