Mar 30, 2010 Letters
Dear Editor,
I refer to the letter posted by Vishnu Bisram in Kaieteur News on March 19, 2010.
It never ceases to amaze me how uninformed and ignorant some Guyanese people can be. Mr. Bisram mentioned paying $1,400 to fly to Guyana in an obvious attempt to mislead the public. I fly home to Guyana approximately every four months and I normally pay between US$690–US$755 depending on the time of the year.
Mr. Bisram obviously either booked business class or booked late when the flights were already full and had to pay a non-restrictive fare because the cheaper fares were already gone.
Mr. Bisram also mentioned speaking to Mr. Nohar Singh regarding service to Guyana. I wonder if Mr. Bisram is aware that Mr. Singh himself is responsible for charging us Guyanese nationals fares to travel home. Mr. Singh and Travelspan mark up their fares way over what other travel agencies and the airline itself charges us.
Mr. Bisram also said that he has a lot of experience in the travel industry. If he did then he would know that airlines are reducing service worldwide based on projections by top economists and travel industry statistics.
In fact Mr. Nohar Singh himself advises a particular US Airline of when to reduce flights to Guyana, and what days of the week to operate. So if Mr. Bisram thinks that the two airlines operating now cannot meet rising demands then he needs to liaise with Mr. Singh to find the right schedule for airlines to operate into Guyana.
Due to the advent of video-conferencing and other electronic virtual services, businesses are reducing travel budgets and related costs.
As a whole the industry is shrinking and this is the main reason why Mr. Singh and the so-called businessmen in New York won’t take the risk of starting an airline.
They also won’t take the risk because they themselves have tried and failed.
If Mr. Bisram really cared about his homeland, he would encourage the Government to offer the two airlines currently operating to Guyana incentives to increase service to Guyana.
For example, maybe we can offer them reduced landing fees on weekdays or between the hours of 600pm to 600am.
They should also focus on reducing crime, as this is a main contributing factor to decreasing vacation travel to Guyana.
The Government should come up with some ideas to get more service from the current carriers into Guyana instead of wasting our limited resources on start-up of an airline that will just be an added drain on our economy and create another “Air Jamaica” scenario for Guyana, and further increase an already inflated high cost of living.
