The song “where are your heroes Caribbean” rings home to Guyana, a nation laden with day to day ordinary people doing extraordinary things as unsung heroes.
Many die of a broken heart and are vaguely celebrated even in death. But while there is no wish for death to show its face, at this time one local group in the cultural and artistic discipline is working to offer tangibly more than just flowers to culturally unsung heroes.
As if it were a point of platitude, it is said that “We seldom celebrate our heroes” but while some may be asleep on the idea, the Actors Action Association (AAA) in Collaboration with the Theatre Guild of Guyana, is organising an event titled, “Celebrating a Cultural Ambassador.”
The event is billed for staging at the Theatre Guild on April 4 from 19:00hrs and Daphne Rogers will be in the spotlight as the guest of honour for her outstanding contribution on that occasion.
Veteran actor and HIV/AIDS activist, Desiree Edghill, is co-ordinating the event as she has done for several others of such a nature.
“Ms Rogers has been involved in all aspects of the Arts in Guyana and we thought that we should let her know how much we value and appreciate her contributions,” Edghill said.
They began their quest to honour people in little but tangible ways by offering Christmas Cheer, in the form of hampers and cash, to three mothers, Ms Lowe, the mother of Actress, Mignon Lowe, Ms Fraser, the mother of Actor; Jewel Fraser, who were only children and who gave much of their energies to ensuring that theatre live.
Both Mignon and Joel passed away under various circumstances before they could be duly honoured.
Veteran actress, Broadcaster and HIV/AIDS activist, Margaret Lawrence, said the public can help the cause by supporting this event and others to follow “as we pay tribute to our heroes while they are alive”.
One time ‘fire-ball’ actress Jermonica Walcott, who is now visually impaired, also benefited from a Christmas basket.
The group’s second event was the “Rodney Family Benefit Concert” titled “Cooling the Blaze” to support Actor/Comedian Henry Rodney, after fire destroyed his home.
Now the public can get involved by purchasing tickets for the Daphne Rogers event at Artistes In Direct Support, 156 Alexander Street Kitty, or by Telephoning 225-5112 or 227-7321, or from some members of the AAA, Margaret Lawrence, Nazim Hussain, Neaz Subhan, Jennifer Thomas, Russell Lancaster, Simone Dowding and Sheron Codogan Taylor.
The event will take the form of a cocktail, starting at 7pm. Following would be a variety show consisting of performances by Margaret Lawrence, Ron Robinson, Rosamund Ado, Desiree Edghill, Paloma Mohamed, Delma Lynch, Lord Canary, Winfield James, Rose October, Alison Barkie, Romel Edmondson, Russell Lancaster and Winslow Patterson, the National Dance Company, Classique Dance Group, The Woodside Choir, Kawokra, Dharmic Nrityasansh, Camo Williams, Jazz Ensemble, and a “Back In Time” Fashion Display.
There will also be video tributes from artistes overseas and some local tributes from Mayor Hamilton Green, Minister of Culture Youth and Sport, Dr Frank Anthony, Francis Quamina Farrier and Edna Cadogan.
The group has expressed gratitude for the support given by Vic Insanally, Impressions Designs, Claire Goring, Nigel’s Supermarket, Village Couture, Negla Brandis, Timeless Treasures and Sterling Optical.
