TUCBER PARK, NEW AMSTERDAM – The members of the Tucber Park Development Committee are appealing to those who resided in the area and are now overseas, to lend a hand to develop Tucber Park, New Amsterdam.
Chairman of the Tucber Park Development Committee, Phillip Carrington indicated that this body was established three weeks ago mainly in an attempt to satisfy what is needed in that location. According to him, the Tucber Park Cooperative Society should have been focusing on the development of the neighbourhood but that body is not functioning.
Very little assistance comes from the New Amsterdam Town Council and recently the Regional Administration did some minor work.
According to him, his group is initially aiming at placing street lights since there is none at the moment. Improving the drainage and irrigation system and upgrading the Tucber Park Play Ground are other areas of focus right now.
To get the ball rolling, a fund raising drive is billed for May 1st at the Tuber Park Play Ground. This event will take the form of a family fun day and a bar-b-que. Novelty activities would see teams, from the very community, coming together to butt heads in football, cricket, circle tennis, a Grade Six General Knowledge quiz and other events.
The members of the Tucber Park Development Committee have also made the initial moves to form an overseas chapter. So far they have contacted a few persons now in the United States of America, Canada and London.
Tucber Park has approximately 400 homes.
Carrington said that during the last Cabinet Outreach, some requests were made to Government Ministers in a bid to boost the pace of development. One of the pleas was for pre-paid meters for street lights, but to date no definite word was forthcoming.
This little community has produced some outstanding personalities in sports – Mr. Carrington himself was a former national football player and athlete. Others include the brothers Adrian Forde and Sherwin Forde, who are still in Tucber Park and overseas-based Guyanese such as James Paul, Adrian Rose, Andre Hazel and Marlon Steele, all in the discipline of football. There is also international cricketer Kevin Darlington who also migrated from the homeland.
Other members of the Tucber Park Development Committee include Petra Ford as Secretary, Julian Moore – Treasurer and six committee members. All interested former residents can contact Mr. Phillip Carrington on 691-0420.
