A police detective was killed last night after the motorcycle he was riding was struck by a minibus near the J&R Service Station Neimes, West Bank Demerara Public Road. Detective Corporal, Davaine Cummings, 32, of Wales West Bank Demerara, reportedly succumbed at around 20:00 hrs at the West Demerara Regional Hospital, a few minutes after the mishap.
Cummings’ distraught reputed wife, Delecia Gulliver, being consoled by relatives following the news of his death.
While reports are still sketchy about what really transpired, this newspaper was told that Cummings, who is stationed at the Brickdam Police Station, was riding to work when he was struck by a minibus which was heading in the opposite direction.
He was taken to the West Demerara Regional Hospital where he succumbed shortly after.
This newspaper was told that the driver of the vehicle was detained at the Vreed-en-Hoop Police Station.
The dead man’s reputed wife, Delecia Gulliver, said she was at home when a relative called and informed her that Cummings was involved in an accident. Gulliver, along with other relatives, immediately left for the West Demerara Regional Hospital where their worst fears were confirmed.
The grieving woman told this newspaper that she saw he reputed husband alive about fifteen minutes before getting the news. She confirmed that her husband was on his way to work at the Brickdam Police Station.
Many of the policeman’s colleagues described him as a very jovial and willing person who was totally committed to his job.
