Mark Vieira finally made a return to competitive racing after a one-year absence, but his nemesis and reigning Group 4 champion Andrew King was on no mood to relinquish his crown as he blazed to two victories and a third place from four starts to keep his title yesterday, at the South Dakota Circuit.
Watched by an impressive, but less than capacity crowd, the veteran King responded to the challenge of Vieira and company in emphatic fashion as he drove with impeccable skill and confidence to grab the first two races, before a collision with Vieira coming out of the clubhouse bend in the final Group 4 event put paid to their chances of a win.
Both cars were unable to finish the race due to damaged wheels which allowed a resurgent Kevin Jeffrey to end his day with a win and two second place finishes.
Ryan Rahaman was extremely impressive throughout the day as he raced unbeaten in the Group Three category, while Stephen Vieira, piloting the Sunburst Orange Juice 1000cc Kawasaki was unstoppable, recording three wins in as many starts.
Also in winners’ row was the veteran Stanley Ming, who won the final go-kart event, while Mohamed Roshandin grabbed the top spot in the unlimited capacity race, despite a heroic effort from King.
In the most anticipated rivalry, King, who clocked 35.3 to enjoy pole position, got off to a positive start to the day when he defeated Jeffrey and Paul Vieira, before returning in the second race to score a convincing win from Jeffrey and Mark Vieira.
The race begun with Jeffrey getting off to a fast start and by the time the pace car had exited the track he made his way to the front trailed by King and Paul Vieira in hot pursuit.
Jeffrey maintained his advantage for four laps chased by King and Paul Vieira, who had moved ahead of his brother Mark and as the pack came out of the first turn on the fifth lap, King in a daring move on the inside overtook Jeffrey and never conceded his advantage going on to win by about 30 metres.
In the final Group 4 race, King was sandwiched between a determined duo of Jeffrey and Mark Vieira and as the cars came out of the clubhouse turn, Vieira, who had attacked on the inside apparently clipped the back wheel of King which forced his car to spin and in the process punctured the tyre, while he too suffered a damaged left front tyre and had to retire for the day.
The entire day’s results will be made in the next issue.
