– country loses discipline after 19 years
Guyana lost its first Athletics title of the Inter-Guiana Games (IGG) after 19 years yesterday at the Baduel Stadium following a disappointing performance from the female team that had filled in for the premier females who did not make the tour.
Guyana, who had been winning athletics since the Games restarted in 1991, managed to chalk up 240 points, one more than French Guiana, in the male and female track and field competition that Suriname won with a total of 295 combined points.
The performance placed Guyana at the bottom of the tri-nation competition after finishing last in both the swimming and football events. The second place finish for Guyana in track and field is unprecedented and certainly marks a changing of the guard.
Full details of the country’s final day performance in athletics will follow later. Up to press time last night, the closing ceremony was ongoing and official overall results had not been released. Guyana will host the second stage of the Games in October.
