Theresa London, daughter of woman professional boxer, Pamela London seemed to have inherited the boxing genes of her mother. The lanky lightweight from the Forgotten Youth Foundation (FYF) first came to prominence in the third edition of the inter-gym boxing championships sometime last year when she boxed her way to the lightweight title and the best boxer prize.
She followed that victory up with several more at other competitions. Last Friday evening, London solidified her position as a force to be reckoned with after she earned a lopsided 3-0 decision over Amanda Norville over three hectic rounds. London was impressive, utilizing accurate punches to surge and stay ahead of her opponent from the Harpy Eagles throughout the bout. At the end of the contest, the two principals attracted voluminous applause and as the announcer said, “it was indeed a pity that one of the fighters had to lose.”
Another fight worthy of mention occurred in the featherweight division when Mervin Ajeday (FYF) opposed Stephen Gouveia (HE). Both fighters turned in courageous performances as the tide swayed from one to the other. First it was Gouveia that unleashed a three punch combination and just when it appeared as though he was getting on top of the situation, Ajeday took over and delivered straight rights and uppercuts of his own.
The heated rivalry reached a high pitch when the referee stepped in and deducted a point from Ajeday for punching on the break. The situation was somewhat equalized less than twenty seconds later when referee, Keith Campbell replicated his decision, this time against Gouveia for a similar offence. Thereafter, Ajeday upped the ante and managed to eke out a 2-1 decision over his opponent.
In the final amateur bout, Devon Boatswain (GDF) needed just 1:46secs of the first stanza to dispose of Kelsey George of the Timerhi Warriors. George must be thanking his lucky stars that a mediator was in the ring. He survived a few but it was totally unreasonable to expect him to withstand the barrage of punches delivered by Boatswain. The third man rightfully waved the proceedings off. In the night’s opener, Richard Williamson was defeated by Donald Trapp.
The boxers all received food hampers donated by furniture giant, Courts. Their representative, Pernell Cummings was on hand to deliver on behalf of the furniture giants.
