Dear Editor,
I have been following the responses and reports emanating from the print and broadcast media relating to the current El Nino condition and am convinced that some media houses are not fully aware of what is actually taking place in Guyana and further afield.
Some media houses and opposition elements are only seeing the current El Nino condition as another means of taking a swipe at government and hard working public servants whom are making every effort to mitigate the harsh effects that are still to be seen and felt as a country.
There have been numerous advertisements and publication of information by the Ministries of Agriculture, Housing and Water and several other nongovernmental organisations advising of the current weather conditions and had urged care and conservation in the use of our water resources.
However, “sometimes we are our worst enemy”. Many of us failed to heed the warnings and continue to waste, even those whose livelihood depended on it, such as farmers.
The negligent acts of farmers must not go unnoticed as some unscrupulous farmers have caused the destruction of their fellow farmers’ crops by tampering with critical structures as in the case on the West Coast of Demerara. This resulted in the mismanagement of water resources and loss of crops.
As a last resort, authorities had to even call in law enforcement officers to monitor irrigation structures to ensure all farmers benefit from the limited water resource that is currently available.
With the El Nino condition still in effect, I would like to call on all the people of Guyana to play an active role to minimize the effects of the current El Nino condition which can have far reaching consequences for us as a country. So let’s put our shoulders to the wheel and recommit ourselves to overcome this natural weather phenomenon and continue to develop Guyana.
