The Rupununi Chamber of Commerce of Industry (RCCI) says that the opening of the Takutu Bridge linking Brazil and Guyana has spurred major growth in the area, especially at Lethem.
Prior to the start of Rodeo 2010 and, after the opening of the bridge, Lethem has been changing at a rapid pace, RCCI said in a press release yesterday.
The Commercial Zone now has four plots with businesses already built and open, with six more in active construction and a number of others just starting construction. Three new businesses will be commissioned over the Rodeo Weekend.
The infrastructure access roads and services are progressing to keep pace with the development and the electrical distribution system throughout Lethem is now actually being upgraded, RCCI said.
There has been a considerable increase of trade with Brazil as a result of the bridge and the completion of the police and Customs facilities on both sides of the border.
The road from Georgetown is now in better condition than it has ever been and this has helped.
Road signs are appearing along the roads but the Chamber in the release said that it is concerned that, with the multi language nature of visitors to the Region, these signs should be pictorial signs based on internationally agreed standards to ensure all visitors understand them.
Regarding the Rodeo itself, much work is being done on the facilities at the grounds and the approach road is being upgraded.
Nearly 100 hotel rooms are now built in Lethem but are already fully booked. However, camping facilities are being made available so that all visitors have somewhere to sleep.
