The needs in the wake of the 7.2 magnitude earthquake of January 12, in Haiti are proving to be immense, requiring a massive response from the international community. The Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement are responding by sending in personnel, emergency response units (ERUs) and relief to meet these needs.
The Haitian National Red Cross Society, the largest community humanitarian organisation in Haiti, has been on the ground helping those affected since the earthquake struck, and continue to be at the heart of the operation.
Furthermore, sister Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies have shown their support by sending staff and equipment as required. So far, 20 ERUs with different specialisations have been deployed to support this operation, the largest ERU deployment registered to date in the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.
From Guyana, De Vaughn Lewis, staff/volunteer of the Guyana Red Cross Society has been deployed since March 9 and is stationed in the IT & TELECOM department assisting in radio communications, computer networking and repairs.
This is the second request from the International Federation for Lewis’s assistance since his RIT Training, his first was in the Bahamas after the hurricane in 2008. Regional Intervention Teams (RIT) is a response tool of the federation-based on a human resources network, available in a short period of time, highly qualified in different areas of humanitarian work in case of disasters. They belong to the National Societies of the Americas, which have been trained under Federation standards to carry out preparation for response and intervention in case of disasters. They are formed and work adequately with the Federation response tools and are activated per request of National Societies affected by a disaster or in case of imminent necessity.
In a release, the Guyana Red Cross Society states that it continues its mission by mobilising the power of humanity, in the case by deploying our collective capacities to help wherever and whenever it is most needed in situations of greatest vulnerability.
The GRCS will also continue to be efficient in their working arrangements and more persuasive in advocating on behalf of the needs and rights of vulnerable people.
