Seven females were among ten participants of an initial twelve that successfully completed the requirements when the Guyana Football Federation National Referee’s Committee in conjunction with the Guyana Football Referee’s Council successfully ran off a beginners referees’ course at the Mackenzie Sports Club Lounge Linden, Sat 20 and Sun 21 March last.
National female players, Natasha Lewis and Janella Smith joined another female footballer, Kinesha Thom of Kwakwani, to amass 82% each and cart off the top honours.
Winseena Welcome and Lauren Murphy both Female basketball players finished in the third and fourth positions respectively while Godfrey Smith finished in the fifth position. The other successful participants are Herbert Hoyte, Sheldron Noel, Tamasia Gilbert and Roberta Romain.
Sessions were conducted by FIFA trained Referee Instructor, Lawrence Griffith with able assistance from Lindly Langhorne, Phillip Gibbons, Selwyn Lancaster and FIFA Referee Stanley Lancaster. Facilitators tutored participants on the laws of the game, the importance of teamwork, strategic positioning, the role of the 4th official and techniques applicable to report writing amongst other topics.
As a follow up to the course, the trainees will undergo practical sessions at the MSC Ground under the guidance of qualified FIFA officials in the mining town.
Meanwhile, football activities in the GFF Super League continue tomorrow at the Bartica Community Centre Ground when Liquid Gold enjoys the home advantage to Buxton United. The latter team has won both of their games and pundits believe they have the capacity to overcome a determined Liquid Gold who defeated Top XX in their last encounter on home soil.
Once again, Liquid Gold would enjoy home support and would start out as the favourites.
Meanwhile, the U-17 Inter Association Preliminary Round will continue today with two games at the GFC ground commencing at 13:00 hrs. Essequibo and Berbice will engage each other in the feature match while West Demerara and East Bank oppose each other in the first fixture. Earlier in the tournament, Berbice and East Bank played to a 1-1 draw while West Demerara thrashed Essequibo 4-nil.
