In sweltering heat on a flat Malteenoes Sports Club (MSC) track, Georgetown defeated East Coast by eight wickets in yesterday’s final of the Demerara Cricket Board (DCB) Inter-Association 50-overs under-19 cricket competition.
East Coast were bundled out for 93 in 39.3 overs as all of the batsmen struggled against impressive bowling by the city side who lost two quick wickets on their way to 94-2 off 18.1 overs as Man-of-the-Match Shameer Fazal (38*) and Clevon Hyman (30*) put together 77 runs in their unfinished third wicket stand.
Arif Habib top-scored with 28 with two fours but labored for 83 balls as he tried to hold the innings together and got token support from Darrell Fredericks who hit three fours in a cameo 23-ball 20. However, only Denesh Mangal (14) and Azad Mohamed (11) of the other batsmen reached double figures as the quality of the batting by the youngsters continue to be a major worry.
Watched by a small but vocal crowd made up of mostly East Coast supporters, East Coast were going steadily before national under-19 left-arm pacer Andre Stoll removed opener Ameer Mohamed for two and without addition to the score removed Skipper Delroy Charles for a duck.
National under-19 pacer Seon Daniels then had Fredericks caught and bowled at 26-3 before left-arm spinner Raj Nanan struck twice in the space of four runs to leave the visitors tottering on 34-5.
Nanan bowled Steve Ramdass for a duck and Kevin Singh for two as the top half of the East Coast batting line up was blown away due to a combination of steady bowling and poor shot selection and questionable technique.
Stoll (2-9), Nanan (2-18), Khan (2-24), Surat (2-16) and Daniels (1-23) were the wicket takers for Georgetown who were badly let down by poor fielding.
Chasing the small target, the hosts reached 30-2 by lunch as Quincy Ovid-Richardson who scored a half-century in the semi-final on Thursday and left-hander Dayanad Roopnarine were quickly removed as Georgetown slipped to 17-2.
Ovid-Richardson seemed intent on finishing the match as quickly as possible and came out with all guns blazing despite where the ball was pitched.
The right-handed Ovid-Richardson (6) was dropped at slip off 17-year-old Enterprise fast bowler Daryl Ross before he was stumped at 14-1, pushing forward to off-spinner Daniel Gravesende, who opened the bowling.
Dayanand Roopnarine played a glorious back foot punch through square-cover off Ross for four before he looked for an expansive cut to a ball that bounced and was caught behind next ball as Ross generated encouraging pace and bounce.
Fazal and Hyman steadied the ship after lunch as the new ball pair looked less threatening as Ross seemed to tire quickly and Gravesande proved easier to play as the shine came off the ball. The third wicket pair batted their team to victory with sensible cricket against a team which was always going to struggle to defend a double digit total on the small ground.
Fazal hastened the end with a four off a ‘free hit’ and a six onto the pavilion roof off leg-spinner Steve Jagobin in the 17th over.
