The Felix Austin Police Training School B Division under the command of Superintendent of police Ian Amsterdam is at present observing a week of activities. This is in observance of their first anniversary since reopening its doors in 2009, after a five year closure.
The College, which is situated at Adventure on the Corentyne Cost, has planned a host of activities which got started on Sunday March 21 with an interfaith Church Service and a Fitness Walk from Tain University of Guyana Berbice Campus to the Police Training School at Adventure.
On Monday the college undertook an outreach to various schools in the Central Corentyne area which include Winfred Gaskin, Manchester Secondary and Central Corentyne High Schools during the outreach exercises students were lectured on the various aspects of the force including Careers opportunity, crime fighting, gang and domestic violence, narcotics, youth development among other topics.
On Tuesday the College expanded itself even further with the formation of a Police Operation Youth Club in Whim to Bush Lot communities.
One of the high points of the Week of activities, A Career day was held on Wednesday. This time instead of the college going to the schools the students were brought in and witnessed various demonstrations on various aspects on how the force works.
A fun day involving the college students and the various military and Para Military organisations in Berbice was held in the afternoon at the college.
Thursday morning was set aside for a Symposium at the Tain University of Guyana Berbice campus while in the afternoon the re-Commissioning of the Quartermaster store situated on the campus was expected to take place.
The activities continued on Friday with a guided tour to the various stations in the No1 and No2 Sub Divisions in Berbice.
A road Relay race is next on the calendar and is slated for today. The race covers a distance of 5km and will be held form Tain UG campus to the college at Adventure.
Police teams from through out the country and made of four male and one female are expected to challenge the present recruits.
While another teams of past recruits are expected to take part. A cultural evening is on this evening.
The activities will culminate with a 40 mile cycle road race for police men recruits and junior cyclists in Berbice.
Since it’s reopening in 2009 one batch of recruits numbering 34 all from the Berbice area has been trained while two sets of Neighborhood police have also been trained.
According to Amsterdam this current batch of recruits numbering 33 unlike the previous batch is drawn from throughout Guyana.
Their training is expected to come to and end in July having started in February.
Female Police Inspector Yonette Stephens is in charge of class room activities.
