A fine half century by Christopher Blucher guided Gunners to a 3 wicket victory over Lima in the final of the R&D Engineering Service twenty/20 cricket competition played recently at the Anna Regina Community Centre Ground in North Essequibo.
Lima won the toss and batted and were restricted to 126 all out in 19.4 overs. Fizal Karim with 22 and Basdeo Khemraj 20 were their leading batsmen as Neilson Gordon, Mark Tyrell, Keron Sewnarine and Renville Badrinauth took two wickets each.
Gunners then responded with 128-7 in 19.5 overs. Blucher led with 67 (3×6), 7×4) and Richie Bishop made 21. Nimron Bahadur grabbed 3-23 and Rajeev Manichand 3-15 for Lima who received the runner up trophy and $10,000. Gunners also collected $15,000 and a trophy for their effort, while Blucher was awarded the man-of-the-match.
The competition best batsman was Manichand with 217 runs and Uvendra Balgobin was the leading wicket taker with 18 scalps.
Meanwhile, Walton Hall and Anna Regina Young Achievers also received trophies for placing third and fourth respectively in the competition.
Scores in the third/fourth place play off:
Walton Hall 131-7 in 20 overs (Navin Bahadur 26, Vishal Lall 26, Khemraj Singh 2-20, Ravindra Narine 2-22, Maduraj Mohan 2-24) beat Anna Regina Young Achievers 80-9 in 20 overs (Tameshwar Dhanpaul 25, Shivraj Bahadur 21, Uvendra Balgobin 2-15, Latchman Lall 2-26) by 51 runs.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony Chairman of the North Essequibo Cricket Committee, Prince Holder thanked the sponsor for coming on board and congratulated both teams for reaching the final.
He said that the sponsor pledged to continue supporting the game in North Essequibo promising a bigger competition next year and Jerseys will be give to the two finalist in the future.
