The fight against the ‘El Nino’ weather phenomenon will cost the Guyana Government an additional $600M, according to Head of State, Bharrat Jagdeo, during a press briefing at the Office of the President, yesterday.
Jagdeo said that the budget has catered for several programmes to help tackle the phenomenon but in his estimation the gravity of the situation has caused the government to invest additional funds.
He explained that a lot of water around the country is being pumped which is proving to be an expensive but necessary task, adding that the Amerindian communities have been hard hit.
The President explained that a team of Ministers has visited the interior and in some cases food had to be delivered according to the President.
According to Jagdeo, the saline intrusion in the riverain communities has penetrated deep into the interior. “This is a very troublesome issue for us….we have set aside some money to supply some tanks.”
“Right now we will probably have to spend about $600M; we have just approved about $350 million.”
