Dear Editor,
I write in relation to the letter written by Mr. Saeed Umrao that was published in your March 24th issue.
I am a resident of Buxton and it was just a few days ago after a long, long time that I was cycling down the road that separates Annandale and Buxton and observed the barriers Mr. Saeed mentioned.
I was not in Guyana during the time the barriers were placed there and though I had seen them before, it seemed quite peculiar to me that the barriers are still there.
I am in support of his recommendation that the media visit the area to take pictures of the barriers that block most of the cross streets for entrance to Annandale via the Buxton Sideline Dam.
Admittedly there was a time of turmoil when the people of Annandale would have felt a need to put up the barriers because of fear. However the average Buxtonian will tell you that they were also very fearful during that time.
Contrary to what the masses might think, most Buxtonians were not involved in the madness that took place between 2002 and 2006 and most of them were not in agreement with it either.
I think it is time the barriers be removed because despite the fact that they are there, Buxtonians and residents of Annandale mix on a regular basis.
Anyone will tell you that the main Market day that takes place on Saturdays in Annandale is flooded by Buxtonians. Buxtonians are also in regular support of the day to day market held in Annandale and the shops and supermarkets there.
It is an inconvenience I would think for those who live on the Sideline Dam who would have in previous years used the Cross Streets that are now blocked to enter Annandale. They now have to walk to the Main Road or down to the one Cross street that is not blocked for entrance to Annandale. I think that residents of Annandale might see it as an inconvenience as well when they have to go through a similar journey for entrance to Buxton.
I trust that those in authority will take heed and move hastily to take action on this matter.
