A solid 77-run opening partnership between national under-17 right-hander Quincy Ovid-Richardson and Shameer Fazal spearheaded Georgetown to an 8th wicket victory against West Demerara in the semi-finals of the Demerara Cricket Board (DCB) Inter-Association 50-over cricket competition at the Malteenoes ground.
The City side dismissed West Demerara for 120 all out in 31.4 overs before galloping to 121-2 in reply to win with 10.5 overs overs to spare to set up today’s final against defending champions East Coast at Malteenoes. Ovid-Richardson led the way with an unbeaten 59 from 52 balls with 8 fours and a six.
East Bank, who lost to East Coast in the other semi-final yesterday at Lusignan, will face West Demerara in the third place play-off today at Lusignan.
Heavy overnight rain resulted in seepage and a two-hour late start and the match being reduced to 32 overs per side.
West Demerara won the toss and elected to bat first in sunny conditions on a slow track and Khanaia Ramkarran and Chandrika Persaud took the score to 20 before Ramkarran (4) was bowled by national under-19 pacer Seon Daniels. Former West Indies under-15 leg-spinner Amir Khan struck twice in two balls as West Demerara slipped to 50-3.
Khan first had Arvin Seepersaud (9) before Persaud who made 26 flicked the next ball to short square-leg.
National under-19 left-arm pacer Andre Stoll also struck twice in two balls in his second spell when he had Vankash Dhaniram, who hit left-arm spinner Raj Nanan for two sixes in his 19, caught and bowled and bowled Tailindra Mangra for a first ball duck to leave the visitors on 83-5.
Off-spinner Shaquille Williams was guilty of providing the batsmen with three ‘free hits’ from no-balls but the West Demerara batsmen failed to capitalize. Twice they could only manage singles after offering skied catches while the batsman missed the other delivery.
Daniels returned to bowl Doesh Sukhu for 24 with three fours, Khan had Amir Mohamed (13) caught at long-on and Phillip Persaud was run out without facing a ball as three wickets tumbled for no run as West Demerara slumped to 115-8.
Sheldon Alexander was removed by Daniels for one and last man Madha Dhanpaul (1) was run out as the visiting team were dismissed with two balls remaining in their innings.
Daniels had 3-13 from six impressive overs while Khan finished with 3-12 from seven overs. Stoll (2-36 from 7) supported well while Nanan had (0-26 from 6) and Williams 0-22 from 5.4 overs) were the other bowlers used by the city side.
Ovid-Richardson and Fazal gave Georgetown the advantage, batting with plenty of confidence in their entertaining half-century partnership before Fazal, who hit two fours from 50 balls, was run out.
The left-handed Dayanand Roopnarine (7) was then taken at long-off as left-arm spinner Dhanpaul struck at 96-2.
Ovid-Richardson stroked Sukhu to the long-on boundary for his 8th four to reach his fifty which also included a six and came from 45 balls as he and Clevon Hyman, one of three keepers in the Georgetown squad, saw their team to an emphatic victory.
In the other match on the East Coast, the home team made 153-5 off their allotted 28 overs in another game affected by rain and then dismissed East Bank for 115 in 23.5 overs.
Kevin Singh hit two fours and three sixes in 46 and got support from Skipper Delroy Charles (29) and Steve Ramdass (20) as Rawel Peters took 2-19 from five overs.
Mark Rhonie hit five fours in a top-score of 38 for East Bank while Dagwandat Singh hit two fours and a six in his 20 in a losing cause.
Pacer Azam Mohamed took 3-28 from 5.5 overs while off-spinner Daniel Gravesande supported with 2-24 from six overs and Darell Ross had 2-30 from 4 overs. (Sean Devers)
