– asks government to intervene
The Clerical and Commercial Workers’ Union (CCWU) has written government accusing management of the Pegasus Hotel (Guyana) of union busting and attempting to undermine it.
Yesterday, Minister of Labour, Manzoor Nadir, acknowledged that a letter has been received from the union and the matter, like any other complaint, was under investigation.
According to a letter addressed to the Chief Labour, Occupational Safety and Health Officer of the Ministry of Labour dated March 3 and sent by CCWU, the union asked for the Ministry’s intervention to get management to meet with them.
The meeting, CCWU said, is to discuss the union’s proposal for amendments to the Collective Labour Agreement (CLA) between CCWU and the hotel, on behalf of the hotel staff.
CCWU explained that in November last year, it submitted proposals for 2009-2010 and 2010-2011. A second letter was sent to management in January, reminding the hotel of the previous correspondence and urging them to meet.
“On February 18, 2010, we wrote to the Chairman, outlining our disgust at the management approach to our proposals and at the same time giving them an ultimatum to meet with us on or before the 26th February, failing which we will be seeking your (Ministry of Labour) involvement.”
The union said that it received a letter from management which indicated that a meeting could not be possible until the return of senior officials at the end of March.
“However we note with interest the moves by management to form what they call a Staff Association and their recent practices of unilaterally making changes to the working conditions of the workers.”
CCWU said it is convinced that based on the history of the new management, as it relates to unions, the letter from Pegasus Hotel is “one of a delaying and union busting tactic as the management attempts to undermine the union”.
Kaieteur News failed to make contact with the hotel’s Chairman, Robert Badal, for a comment yesterday.
