The highly anticipated return clash between Women’s World International Boxing Association (WIBA) bantamweight champion, Shondell ‘Mystery Lady’ Alfred and American Gladiator, Corinne ‘Sexy Panther’ Van Ryck DeGroot is scheduled for Sunday May 2 at the Princess Hotel, Providence EBD and already Alfred is spouting confidence.
The diminutive world champion signed the contract to formalize the deal yesterday afternoon at the Duke Street office of Odinga Lumumba. President of the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC), Peter Abdool also witnessed the ceremony and proclaimed that Guyanese boxing buffs are in for a treat.
Lumumba, who won the prize bid organized by the GBBC, said that he envisages a competitive bout and just could not resist the temptation to be a part of the bidding process. He noted that the bout was one of significance that would give Alfred an opportunity to remove all doubts from the minds of her detractors.
He expressed gratitude to the GBBC President for allowing his promotional group the opportunity to promote the bout while expressing admiration for Alfred’s display of courage.
Alfred expressed confidence in repeating the victory feat boasting that she is the better boxer of the two. “I beat her already and I will beat her again,” Alfred proclaimed.
She disclosed that she has already opened camp and now that the fight has been formulized will be intensifying training sessions.
Quizzed on her approach to the fight Alfred kept the details close to her chest. “There would be lots of changes in my style and application,” she assured. Alfred said that she will continue to work with her long time trainers Joseph Murray and Sebert Blake. She has also added former amateur boxing champion, Wencel Thomas to her training team.
Alfred and DeGroot fought for the WIBA belt on September 25 last and at the end of the 10 rounds slugfest Alfred was declared the winner.
DeGroot later protested the decision citing inconsistencies in the refereeing while demanding that the fight be pronounced null and void.
She further requested that President of the WIBA, Ryan Wissow order a rematch.
The WIBA boss turned down the former request but subsequently acquiesced to the second. McNeal Enterprises, headed by Odinga Lumumba earned the right to stage the bout following a successful purse bid put up by the GBBC.
