Defending champ Robin Persaud in for tough challenge
Gauging from the intense battles that have been the order of the day so far this year, defending champion of the Essequibo leg of the Cheddi Jagan Memorial 50-mile cycle road race, Robin Persaud, will find the going tough to retain his crown in Sunday’s race which is sponsored by El Dorado Trading and Suresh Jagmohan.
There is no clear cut winner going into what is anticipated to be another thriller with the riders showing excellent fitness and the desire to win.
Alonzo Greaves took the Berbice leg of the race three Sunday’s ago while veteran Raymond ‘Steely’ Newton blistered the field to win the West Demerara leg on Sunday last.
Another star studded field is expected to face starter’s orders on Sunday at Supenaam, the starting point at 09:00hrs. Junior Niles, Enzo Matthews, Marlon ‘Fishy’ Williams, Albert Philander, Warren ‘Forty’ Mc Kay, John Charles and Daniel Ramchurejee are some of the other riders who will be equally eager to make a podium finish.
The junior category is expected to be dominated again by the Berbice based Neil Reece but Paul De Nobrega, who has been playing second fiddle to Reece, will attempt to change that around this time.
After pedaling off at Supenaam, the race will proceed to Charity before returning to Anna Regina for the finish.
The veteran, upright and ladies will start at Anna Regina; proceed to Charity before returning to Anna Regina.
The first six (6) finishers overall, first three (3) juniors, veterans and upright along with the first veteran over 60 years and the first two (2) ladies will all receive prizes. Eight (8) prime prizes will also be at stake during the race.
Cyclists are being reminded to wear their club jerseys and also will be called upon to produce their 2010 license.
Meanwhile, transportation for cyclists and officials will leave the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport at 05:00h on Sunday, March 28, 2010.
