Grove Hi Tec & Timehri Panthers battle for title
Following a few years of inactivity, competitive football has made a grand return to the East Bank and the first tournament to welcome back the game is set for an exciting climax this Sunday at the Grove Playfield.
Eight teams started out the two-round league last year and it is now down to the final two as they battle for bragging rights and the top prize of $150,000.
The teams in the final, Timehri Panther’s (21) and Grove Hi Tec are only separated by a single point which means that the home team must win to take the crown while Timehri only needs a draw.
Fans are in for some exciting action as both teams are confident of going all the way but only one will actually be given the opportunity to lift the championship trophy.
While the last game of the league which saw the top four teams taking forward their points to the final four, the 3rd and 4th place encounter is more or less for formality with Kuru Kuru Warriors (16) points taking on debutants Yarrowkabra (12 points) from 13:00hrs. Yarrowkabra has nothing to lose since they have surprised all and sundry in their debut season but they will undoubtedly be going after a win to end the 2009 season on a high.
The Warriors must play hard to stave off the impending threat by their fellow Linden Soesdyke Highway based counterparts.
The 2nd place team will pocket $75,000 with $50,000 and $25,000 being presented to the 3rd and 4th placed teams along with trophies.
Stag Beer Executive, John Maikoo is expected to be on hand to do the ceremonial kick off of the ball for the final game.
