The Dorsette Family of No 50 Village Upper Corentyne will on Sunday stage the second annual Desmond Dorsette Memorial classic Run.
The race which will cover a distance of 3 ½ miles will begin at No 48 Village Side Line Dam and is expected to finish at the popular No53 Sports Complex Corentyne, starting at 08:30hrs.
It is open to all U-19 athletes in Berbice while there will be a special category for U-13 participants.
Attractive Prizes which will include cash incentives, trophies and other memorabilia will be presented to the first five finishers in each category while special incentives will also be available to the top female athletes.
Added incentive, compliments of the Dorsette family will also be given to every participant who would have completed the event.
The late Superintendent Dorsette was an ardent sports fan who participated in numerous sporting activities including Cricket and athletics during his hay day in the Guyana Police Force and in the community.
A native of East Canje, Dorsette migrated after retiring and would return with his family from time to time to do charity and community work as well as organize some youths work and stage a few sporting events.
Ironically, last year it was during the final stages of preparing for the road race the community leader and re-migrant Guyanese passed away after taking ill suddenly.
The family however decided to proceed with the event.
His wife Waveney Dorsette, a retired Head Mistress, a community activist and also a re-migrant had told this publication that they decided to proceed with the event, because, that is what he would have wanted.
“He was always a community leader and sports enthusiast, even in his days in the Guyana Police Force,” she had said.
She said that their intention was to help in the resuscitation of the once popular No53 sports complex to what it once was.
Their hope she said was to make the club one of the leading lights in the county, a hope she still has.
The club at present is involved in a number of activities at the moment including Circle Tennis, Cricket, football, volleyball, basketball and Table Tennis.
