Defence counsel for Twyon Thomas, Khemraj Ramjattan, has stated that as far as he is aware there has been no defence filed by the Attorney General as indicated to the court. The Attorney General’s office said that they needed time to file a defence.
Yesterday, Ramjattan said that the matter would be called again on Monday before Justice Roxanne George-Wiltshire.
Responding to queries relating to the Thomas family opting to drop the matter in return for a monetary compensation, Mr. Ramjattan said that he could not confirm that.
The teen’s mother Shirley Thomas said her family has not accepted any money nor do they have any intention to accept money to settle the matter.
The woman who was seemingly upset at being asked the question of compensation said it is all rumors.
“I was out of town all the time, and people keep telling me that they hear I take money to settle the matter. I will not take any money to settle the matter. My son can’t even work to bring in money. Right now all I want is justice,” Ms. Thomas said.
The woman added that while she was out of town, people kept telling her that she should not bother to visit Georgetown since the matter was dismissed in the High Court because her son was not attending.
“My mother-in-law is sick. I came out to see her and I would visit my lawyer so that he can update me on what is going on with the matter.
She said that currently her son is not back to his normal self but is coping with life as he is safely recovering with family.
The matter in the High Court was called on March 10, last, when Ramjattan expressed his surprise at the request for an extension, in light of the fact that culpability for the allegation of torture has already been established.
Ramjattan had earlier expressed confidence that his client would be successful in the bid to secure a sizeable compensation as well as punitive payment by the state. These things should be a deterrent in preventing future torture by ranks empowered by the State.
He said that there has already been an admission to the act of torture committed on the young boy, evident by the fact that the two ranks involved have been charged.
