Group 4 contender Andrew Morgan, who is returning after a one-year self-imposed hiatus is confident that he will be in the reckoning come Sunday when the Guyana Motor Racing & Sports Club stages its opening Meet of the season at the South Dakota Circuit.
Morgan was speaking with Kaieteur Sport on Tuesday where he was seen inspecting the final preparations of his tube-frames Mazda RX7 car which will challenge the likes of reigning champion Andrew King, Mark Vieira, Keith Evelyn and Kevin Jeffrey in a division expected to produce fireworks following the return of Vieira to the ranks.
The soft-spoken driver said that once the car is running well he expects to feature in the top three, singling out Vieira and King as the main threats to his dominance.
“Mark has done some very good times in practice, but word is that he is experiencing some handling problems, so that makes Andrew the man to beat,” Morgan felt.
He added that the car has been registering some impressive times hovering around the 35.1 seconds mark and they’re hoping to break the 35 seconds barrier.
Touching on the current state of the sport, Morgan said that it is definitely on the up, but the prohibitive cost for spare parts is having a negative impact on the teams with little or no sponsorship.
Morgan disclosed that he has been racing cars since around the 1990’s and have competed in Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica.
“I’m eager to get back into competition so come out Sunday and witness some exciting races,” he warned fans.
