Perseverance seems to be the watchword as the executives of the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC) and the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) prepare to stage the second edition of the Pro/Am boxing card, scheduled for the Cliff Anderson Sports hall (CASH) on Friday March 26 next.
President of the GBBC and the Caribbean Boxing Federation (CABOFE), Peter Abdool is optimistic that despite the lukewarm attendance at the first card, the second promises to be better. Abdool gauged this output based on feedback received after the inaugural programme was staged. He said that even though the venue was somewhat sparse, many persons viewed that fights live on television and were heartened by the performances.
GABA boss, Steve Ninvalle echoed the sentiments of Mr. Abdool saying that the card allows boxers in the amateur sector to showcase their skills while enjoying heightened activity. He also mentioned the recently staged Berbice version of the Pro/Am card where patrons in the Ancient County attended a live boxing card in that region after a prolonged absence.
Meanwhile, former secretary of the GABA, Howard Cox who served as an analyst in the first Pro/Am venture said that the first attempt was indeed heartening. He said that in his view the first edition had all the ingredients of a top class card. He is urging the public to support the venture.
And American based Guyanese pugilist, Elton ‘Coolie Bully’ Dharry arrived in Guyana yesterday to keep his ring date with Wilmut Hutson. He said that he has prepared well for the fight and local fans can expect to see an action packed encounter. Dharry, who trains at the Jackie Gleason’s Gym, Brooklyn said that he was devastating during his training sessions in the North American country.
A recent report coming out of that gym verified Dharry’s story that he had stopped several of his opponents during preparations. His trainer, Dillon Carew was unable to make the trip to Guyana and Dharry would be under the expert tutelage of local boxing technician, Maurice ‘Bizzy’ Boyce.
The other professional bouts are, Mandessa Moses against Ali Marques in a catchweight encounter. Shawn Pyle opposes Paul Lewis (jnr) in the junior welterweight department. The card would also witness 8 amateur boxers vying for supremacy against each other. All bouts are four rounders.
Meanwhile, the executives of the GABA have released the names of the amateur boxers on the card. In the U15 category, Donald Trapp (Timerhi Warriors) is up against Richard Williamson of the Pocket Rocket Boxing Gym (PRBG). Female featherweights Theresa London (FYF) and Amanda Norville (HE) will square off in the second amateur bout while Mervyn Ageday (FYF) and Stephon Gouveia box each other. The final amateur bout should be a scorcher when Devon Boatswain (GDF) and Delroy James (REP) go after each other.
The Pro/Am boxing cards are organized by the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC) in collaboration with the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) and the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sports.
The first gong to facilitate the amateur bouts sounds at 20:00hrs while the first professional bout gets underway half an hour after the amateur bouts are concluded. Fans are encouraged to support the venture which provides meaningful activities for local pugilists.
