Dominica’s Bath Estate arrival delayed
Dominica’s Club Champions Bath Estate, who were expected to arrive here yesterday ahead of Group D action in the Caribbean Football Union Champions League Qualifying tournament, which was scheduled to kick off today at the Georgetown Cricket Club Ground, have been delayed due to flight problems throwing the group fixtures in limbo.
Kaieteur Sport has been reliably informed that efforts are being made to include the Guyana Defence Force in this group, which also features Alpha United and Walking Boys of Suriname.
However, this is being cited as unfair to have the two Guyanese teams in the same qualifying group at this stage of the competition.
Several GDF players were denied US visas to travel to Puerto Rico.
GDF has been drawn in group B to be hosted by Puerto Rico club side Bayamon FC and also includes top St. Vincent & The Grenadines club, Systems 3. The Army were scheduled to play on March 25 and 27.
Several persons associated with the sport are peeved at this development of having GDF and Alpha play in the same grouping at this early stage. They expressed disgust at the development, citing scant disregard of the local teams.
Kaieteur Sport has been reliably informed that both Dominica’s Bath Estate and Walking boys of Suriname are expected to arrive here today and the fixtures could be contested on Thursday, Friday and Sunday at the GCC ground.
The Management of the GDF has dispatched letters to the Caribbean Football Union and the Guyana Football Federation seeking their intervention following the denial of the visas.
The Army has asked them to consider a change of venue given the reality of the situation; the scheduled dates – be reconsidered; or that the GDF be placed in another group.
If any of the above is not possible, the GDF is asking that clause A under ‘Withdrawals’ (force majeure) in the CFU Club Championship Tournament Regulations be activated. The regulation states: “Teams having entered the competition are obligated to play all their matches until they are eliminated. After entering the tournament, a team that fails to participate, shall be penalized as follows, except in unforeseen circumstances and cases of force majeure as determined by the CFU Executive Committee.”
However, none of the other considerations have developed and the replacing of the GDF in this group seems possible.
