Yvonne Murray turned in an impeccable performance, winning all six of her games and amassing a positive spread of 448 to cart off the honours when the Guyana Association of Scrabble Players (GASP) staged a two tier tournament for players that occupy the top ten rankings and those ranked from number 10 and over.
Murray made her intentions clear from the very first game when she defeated Clairmont Williams by a massive spread of 211. Julian Skeete offered stiff resistance but lost out to Murray by a slim spread of 11. Roger Gonsalves also put up a spirited effort but lost another close game to Murray (23).
Ruby Cummings gave Murray a good fight in the first game of the post lunch period but the in form Murray prevailed by a spread of 54. She then disposed of Kampta Narine (64) and Harold Michael (85) to wrap up a highly successful tournament.
Ruby Cummings finished second with 4 games and a positive spread of 454 while R. O. Michael also won 4 games but occupied the third place by dint of a lower spread of minus 25.
Leon Belony, competing among the top ten rated players dropped a game to Abigail McDonald by a spread of 45 but rebounded to win his six other games. He finished the tournament on 6 points and a positive spread of 492. His victims were Collins (48), Orlando Michael (217), Adams (86), Krakowsky (15), Harris (132) and Gafoor (39).
National champion, Abigail McDonald lost to Collins (52) and Orlando Michael (65) but defeated Ulric Harris (78), Gafoor (30), Belony (65), James Krakowsky (15) and Ewart Adams (90).
Former national champion, Fred Collins lost games to Belony (48) and Moen Gafoor (204) but chalked up five wins to finish in third place with 5 games and a positive spread of 57.
The tournament, staged at the Malteenoes Sports Club, also served as a practice session for the players that are scheduled to wing out of Guyana for Trinidad and Tobago to participate in the Tri Nation tournament between the host nation, Barbados and this country.
