An alarm raised by a teacher at about 08:30hrs yesterday probably averted what could have been the total destruction of the West Demerara Secondary School.
Following what is believed to be an arson attempt, a teacher of the school discovered a cupboard in flames in Form 3B classroom while the floor of another classroom, Form 3C, was also lit.
This was discovered as students began arriving for schooling. However, when the alarm was raised, the Headmistress of the school took emergency action and alerted the Guyana Fire Service and the Police who responded promptly.
Luckily, the burning cupboard was not attached to the wall and as such, was thrown out of the classroom onto the tarmac, and the flames put out. A bottle containing kerosene was discovered at the western end of the school building.
Minimal damage was done to the two classrooms but the walls were scorched on the western sides of both rooms and some text books were also destroyed. Up to news time, there has been no indication as to who the arsonist is but officials have promised that the perpetrator will be caught and brought to justice.
The police and the fire service are carrying out their investigations but there has not been any comment from the Ministry of Education.
West Demerara Secondary School was founded in January 1965 at the residence of Mrs. Lucille David, at 116 New Road, Vreed-en-Hoop. At that time, it was called the Vreed-en-Hoop High School. The school remained at this location for nearly 25 years, before being destroyed by fire on April 23, 1993.
West Demerara Secondary School was temporarily housed at the Vreed-en-Hoop Community High School and the Malgre Tout Primary.
In January of 1999, teachers and students moved from Malgre Tout into the new building, at Klein Pouderoyen, which was officially declared open on February 5, 1999 by the then President Janet Jagan.
