Guyana will face the Windward Islands at Gilbert Park in Trinidad next Monday in their opening match of this year’s Regional under-15 cricket competition as they hunt their 3rd title at this level.
Barbados face Jamaica and the Leewards take on host Trinidad and Tobago in the other two first round matches.
The South Americans have failed to capture championship honours at this level in a decade after lifting their only two titles at this level in 1998 in Jamaica and at home the next year.
Guyana finished 3rd in the inaugural Regional under-15 series in Trinidad in 1996 before finishing in the penultimate position in St Lucia in 1997, but after their back-to-back successes they have not been able to win another title.
This year, preparations had to shift to the Essequibo Coast due to the unavailability of the former Guyana Cricket Board Hotel in Georgetown (which is no longer being rented by the Board) and the Hostel and indoor facility at LBI which is still not fully completed almost five months after GCB President Chetram Singh said it would have been completed.
The team, under Coach Adrian Amsterdam and Manager Elroy Stepheny will complete a one-week encampment at the Essequibo Cricket Board Hostel in Anna Region on Friday before departing for the Twin Island Republic on Sunday.
The batting could be Guyana’s strength this year with Brian Sattaur, in his 2nd year at this level, expected to lead the batting charge on what should be slow and low wickets which should favor spin in very dry, hot and dusty conditions.
While the GCB is still to announce the Captain and Vice-Captain, Shawn Perreira is expected to be named Skipper and Ricardo Adams his deputy while left-arm arm spinner Gudakesh Motie-Kanhai, in his 4th year at this level, is expected to play a crucial role in the bowling department.
