Guyana’s two member squash team of Nicolette Fernandes and Ashley Khalil suffered mixed fortunes at the 2010 South American Games in Medellin Colombia.
On Saturday, Ashley Khalil came within one game of creating a major upset when she lost to Ecuador’s Magaly Velez 13/15 11/9 11/13 11/8 2/11 in the round of 16 women’s individual category. She got her revenge later in the day when she teamed up with Nicolette Fernandes in the women’s doubles quarter-final to oust the Ecuadorian pair of Velez and Nicole Corillo.
The Guyanese pair then lost in the semi-final to a strong Argentine team of Cecilia Cerquetti and Antonella Falcione 9/11 7/11 on Sunday.
That result gave the ladies the bronze medal which is Guyana’s only medal at the Games so far. Nicolette Fernandes then returned on Sunday to blow away her two opponents in the individual competition to ensure Guyana a second medal when she plays Colombia’s Silvia Angulo in the Gold Medal match later today.
In the quarter-final she took care of Colombia’s young star Catalina Pelaez 11/7 11/3 11/6, then she went on to turn back the challenge of Argentina’s Cecilia Cerquetti 11/5 11/5 11/5.
The Guyanese pair is also scheduled to compete in the team competition which starts today, but they will be severely handicapped when they open their quest against Brazil as they go into the encounter already one match down by virtue of fielding one player short in the team competition.
