Four batsmen smashed half-centuries as Canal Number 2 hammered Zeeburg by 183 runs in latest action in the New Line Aqua Farm West Demerara 40-overs cricket competition on Sunday at the Canal Number 2 Sports Club ground.
National left-handed batsman Gajanand Singh stroked 9 fours and 2 sixes from 66 balls in an accomplished 66 while Berbice all-rounder Paul Wintz, Chabiraj Ramcharran and Andrew Lyght Junior also registered fifties as the hosts clobbered 31 fours and 25 sixes as they piled up a massive 356-6 when their 40 overs expired. Former Georgetown under-19 off-spinner Toralva Scipio had 3-22 and Wintz 2-34 as Zeeburg fell for 173 in 36.2 overs.
Opening batsman Lyght, the son of former Guyana opener Andrew Lyght, was in blistering form and galloped to 57 from just 15 balls with fours and 7 sixes to set the foundation for the batting blitz in sweltering heat. Ramcharran took just 27 balls for his 52 which was decorated with 5 fours and 4 sixes while Wintz’s top-score of 72 lasted 25 balls and included 5 fours and 6 sixes.
Guyana under-17 batsman Dayanand Roopnarine lashed 5 sixes from just 12 balls in a cameo 39 as the visitors were consistently put to the sword on the small ground.
Yogesh Dhanpaul had 3-54 from 7 overs for Zeeburg who were never in the hunt despite a 48-ball 67 with 10 fours and 3 sixes from Doodnarine. Timour Mohamed (25) was the only other batsmen to pass 20 as Scipio and Wintz did the damage with the ball for Canal Number 2, who was without former First-Class players Mahendra Nagamootoo and Andre Percival.
The comprehensive win has taken pre-tournament favorites Canal Number 2 into the semi-finals. (Sean Devers)
